Julie Hempel’s “Gained in Translation” explores the ways in which cultures are enriched by words, phrases, or concepts translated from other languages. Take a look around and you’ll find borrowed treasure tucked away into every corner of our daily discourse, from the wildly popular Squid Game to the kindergarten school year. Hempel reminds us that enriching our understanding of multiple languages can change our world in wonderful ways. Julie is a translator from Spanish to English. Her primary interests are the intersections of race, class, and gender in contemporary Mexican and Chicanx literature, as well as the hybrid identities in Asian-Latin American narrative and poetry. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Latin American literature and teaches at Austin College, where she is also the Director of the Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies. She has translated works by Mexican writers: Aurora Velasco, Carmen Villoro, Erik de Luna, and Peruvian writer: Siu Kam Wen. Idaho Murder Suspect Appears in Shackles at Court Hearing Bryan Kohberger, who is accused of murdering four University of Idaho students, was taken into a Pennsylvania court in shackles. After waiving extradition, he's expected to be flown to Idaho by U.S. Marshals. Detectives started focusing on Kohberger after discovering DNA traced to a family member through a public genealogy database. Embracing a life of mediocrity | Crispin Thurlow | TEDxBasel It’s hard to accept life in the middle when the relentless language of superiority and comparison tells us we should always be the best or just better. Might the answer lie partly in rethinking mediocrity and perhaps even learning to embrace it? Crispin grew up in South Africa and England where he trained as a psychologist and then an actor. Long story short, he is now Professor of Language and Communication at the University of Bern. He previously held professorships at the University of Washington in the USA and completed his PhD at Cardiff University in Wales. As a sociolinguist, Crispin’s core research interest lies in the way people make sense of social difference and inequality in their everyday communication. We’ve got Mark McCann in his Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and he’s lining up against Mat in a Kia EV6! This is no normal EV6, though, it’s the EV6 GT! As a result, this EV is equipped with two electric motors that can produce an incredible 585hp and 740Nm of torque! It’s pretty heavy though, with its 77kWh battery pack helping it tip the scales at 2,125kg! However, it’s still relatively cheap, coming in at £63,000. As for the Lambo, well it’s a whole lot more expensive, costing around £380,000! Naturally, though, it’s packed full of power, with its 6.5-litre V12 good for 770hp and 720Nm. It’s much lighter than the Kia, too, coming in at 1,525kg. Think it’ll be a walkover for the Lambo? Well, perhaps Mat has a trick up his sleeve!
