  • Barney Frank on passage of Respect for Marriage Act

Former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay, attended Thursday’s House vote for the Respect for Marriage Act.

Speaking after the vote, the 82-year-old Frank said, “I was here for the birth of [the Defense of Marriage Act] so I am very grateful to be here for the funeral. It’s kind of a New Orleans moment: We are tooting our horns for the funeral, a much happier occasion than the birth.”

DOMA, which banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage, was passed by Congress in 1996 and signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton. Frank was one of 67 House members to vote against the law.

Frank also touted the work of Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and defended her decision to not push for a vote before last month’s elections.

  • Biden pardons Thanksgiving turkeys: 'There's no "fowl" play'

President Biden pardoned turkeys Chocolate and Chip at a White House ceremony on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022. The broad-breasted white turkeys, weighing in at 46 and 47 pounds, respectively, were raised by National Turkey Federation chairman Ronnie Parker at Circle S Ranch in Monroe, N.C. Chocolate's and Chips' plans include earning an honorary poultry science degree from N.C. State University. The Tar Heel state ranks first in the nation for poultry production and second for turkey production.

"We can't forget the reason for Thanksgiving in the first place," Biden said at the event. "That's what the Thanksgiving tradition is all about, being grateful for what we have," Biden said as he reflected on being grateful for the medical community and COVID-19 vaccines to enable Americans to gather safely this year.

  • Famine to be declared in Somalia next month

Following four consecutive years of drought, parts of Somalia are projected to enter a famine next month based on new reports about acute food insecurity in the region.
