• Why don’t we cover the desert with solar panels? - Dan Kwartler

Explore what would happen if we covered the Sahara Desert in solar panels, and the possibility of it solving our energy crisis.

    --

Stretching over roughly nine million square kilometers and with sands reaching temperatures of up to 80° Celsius, the Sahara Desert receives about 22 million terawatt hours of energy from the Sun every year. That’s well over 100 times more energy than humanity consumes annually. So, could covering the desert with solar panels solve our energy problems? Dan Kwartler digs into the possibility.

Lesson by Dan Kwartler, directed by Christoph Sarow, AIM Creative Studios.

  • Explore the psychology of the phenomenon known as cute aggression, which is the urge to squeeze, bite or pinch something cute.

    --

Watching a kitten fumbling around, it might feel as if you’ve never encountered anything so devastatingly adorable in your mortal life. You may want to pet its soft fur and kiss its tiny head. But you may also feel the conflicting urge… to squeeze or smush the kitten, maybe even stuff it in your mouth. What is this peculiar phenomenon? Joshua Paul Dale explores the urge known as cute aggression.

Lesson by Joshua Paul Dale, directed by Oksana Kurmaz.

  • Gained in translation | Julie Hempel | TEDxAustinCollege

Ever get the feeling that you just can’t find that one word you’re looking for? What if you were to learn it resides in a language entirely different from your own? Julie Hempel’s “Gained in Translation” explores the ways in which cultures are enriched by words, phrases, or concepts translated from other languages.

Take a look around and you’ll find borrowed treasure tucked away into every corner of our daily discourse, from the wildly popular Squid Game to the kindergarten school year. Hempel reminds us that enriching our understanding of multiple languages can change our world in wonderful ways.

Julie is a translator from Spanish to English. Her primary interests are the intersections of race, class, and gender in contemporary Mexican and Chicanx literature, as well as the hybrid identities in Asian-Latin American narrative and poetry.

She has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Latin American literature and teaches at Austin College, where she is also the Director of the Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies. She has translated works by Mexican writers: Aurora Velasco, Carmen Villoro, Erik de Luna, and Peruvian writer: Siu Kam Wen.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  • Lagos, Nigeria is a place that the world needs to know about!

Help me spread that message by sharing this video or any content that is moving the narrative of what is actually in the motherland.

We've seen enough of the foolishness and one-sided approach of coming to Africa for safaris, its time to show what really goes down!

Let's show the world how we. . .
    -Create
    -Explore
    -Party
    -Eat

and bring the most amazing energy and vibes you will ever feel.
